We are in the midst of the final mix on Carl Bessai's latest feature, Repeaters. This finely tuned thriller features an assemble cast of drug addicts in rehab who are united in a seemingly endless recurrence of the same day. Repeaters will premiere during a special presentation series of veteran Canadian filmmakers at the Toronto International Film Festival. Congratulations, Carl!

Post Modern Welcomes THE HAUNTING HOUR

Renowned producing and writing partners, Dan Angel and Billy Brown, bring Vancouver its latest series The Haunting Hour. Similar to Outer Limits but for kids, every episode of The Haunting Hour will be its own spooky story with new characters. The HUB TV Network (formerly Discovery Kids) will air The Haunting Hour starting this fall. Sound post on the first of the 18 half-hour episodes will begin at Post Modern in September.

HICCUPS Renewed!

CTV has renewed Brent Butt's hilarious series, HICCUPS, for another season. Congratulations to Brent, David Storey, Arvi Liimatainen and Laura Lightbown! Their winning combination assured the second season: a rare success story in Canada's current broadcast market. We look forward to welcoming the series back this fall!

New Series at Post Modern

We are very happy to report that two of this year's pilots have gone to series: Shattered and Hiccups, each for 13 episodes. Post Modern has recently wrapped the final mix on Hiccups and the first mix on Shattered.

Brent Butt has delivered a hilarious follow-up to his Corner Gas legacy. The first season of Hiccups features Butt's signature humour and the gifted performance of his co-star, Nancy Robertson as Millie Upton. CTV's promotion of the new series during the Olympics is partly credited for the premiere's record breaking audience of 1.9 million. Everyone involved is very hopeful the series will be renewed.

Shattered's dark storylines offer stark contrast to the lightness of Hiccups. The action-packed crime drama stars Callum Keith Rennie as Ben Sullivan, a homicide detective who has multiple personality disorder. Shattered is produced by Force Four Entertainment and will air on Global later this year.

Max Steel Returns!

Post Modern is well into post on the latest edition of Max Steel. Our work began in February with a series of interstitials and will wind up with the final mix on the movie in July. James Fonnyadt is back on board to sound design. These shows are intense but Post Modern's creative formula has proven to be a winner for Rainmaker Animation and their client, Mattel.

Paradox at Post Modern

Post Modern welcomes Bernie Melanson and Aaron Gilbert and their TV movie, Paradox. Brenton Spencer directed this sci-fi action thriller starring Kevin Sorbo, a familiar face in the halls of Post Modern. Sorbo plays homicide detective Sean Nault, a cop on a parallel Earth whose technology is powered by magic. Post will continue on Paradox through May.

1001 Nights For Another Generation

Post Modern Sound is very pleased to welcome Big Bad Boo Studios and their new animated series, 1001 Nights. The classic tales of the Arabian Nights are spun into cartoon stories designed for a young audience. Big Bad Boo Principals Shabnam Rezaei and Aly Jetha brought on board Producer Charmaine Lazaro and Director Chad Van De Keere to guide the new series. We look forward to a fun-filled season of genies, mermaids, emperors, thieves and more!

Fancy Pilot at Post Modern

Crescent Entertainment has brought another pilot to life. In stark contrast to their dark and mysterious pilot, The Cult, from earlier this year, Fancy is a hilarious and colourful half-hour of laughs. Fancy is written and directed by Wendy Hopkins. The pilot's namesake Maureen Fancy (Kate Hewlett) is the perfect and perky Queen Maureen on a kids' TV show but in her off-screen life is full of insecurities. Jana Peck and Patrick McKenna round out the lead cast and bring a zany influence to the mix.

Flicka 2 Wraps at Post Modern

At summer's end 20th Century Fox returned to Post Modern for Flicka 2. When skateboarder Carrie McLaughlin (Tammin Sursok) is forced to live at her estranged father's ranch, she finds a kinship with a wild horse named Flicka who is equally unhappy. The Post Modern crew enjoyed working with Director Michael Damian and his wife, Producer Janeen Damian. The pair brought knowledge, creativity and levity to the audio post process.

Post Modern Slated to Post Three New Series

Nickleodeon has ordered 26 episodes of Tommy Lynch Co.'s The Troop. The half-hour kids' show follows Jake (Nick Purcell), a typical teenager struggling through adolescence, who dreams of creating his own comic book. His school counsellor (John Marshall Jones) recruits him into the Troop, a secret society that protects the world from the monsters that walk among us. Teaming with the smart, athletic and popular Hayley (Gage Golightly) and annoying paranormal expert Felix (David Del Rio), Jake discovers a whole new existence. Larry Sugar's No Equal Entertainment is producing the series.

CTV has ordered 13 episodes of Hiccups, Brent Butt's new half-hour comedy. The series stars Corner Gas' Nancy Robertson, who plays the role of Millie Upton, a children's author with anger management issues which she says cause "hiccups," outbursts she can't control. She seeks the assistance of a self-appointed life coach played by Brent. Laura Lightbown and David Storey are executive producers.

CanWest Global has ordered 13 hours of Shattered. Starring Callum Keith Rennie and directed by Bobby Roth, Shattered follows the exploits of Kyle Logan, a brilliant detective, whose multiple-personality-disorder has a major impact on his job. Shattered is produced by E1 Entertainment and Force Four Films Ltd.

Max Steel Mixes It Up At Post Modern

Working closely with Mattel producers, Audu Paden and Vincent Edwards, and Director, Greg Richardson, James crafted the myriad design elements including the signature toy sounds and the cast of evil creatures. The final mix rocked the studio!

Pilot Season at Post Modern Sound

Excellent pilots abound this season and Post Modern has had the good fortune of posting three strong candidates in December and January. The first to pass through the studio was Brent Butt's comedy for CTV, Hiccups. The Cult came next: a mysterious, tension-filled hour produced by Crescent Entertainment for CBC. Rounding out the trio is Bobby Roth's crime drama Shattered, produced by Force Four Films for CanWest.

Features Close Out 2008 & Ring In 2009

Post Modern was happy to welcome back filmmaker Carl Bessai at the helm on Cole, a character drama starring Richard de Klerk (Cole) and Kandyse McClure. The town of Lytton has a central role in this beautifully crafted portrayal of small town life and family strife. Cole is scheduled for release in 2009.

Jonathan Glatzer joined us for his feature writing and directorial debut on Safety Glass. This Insight Films project stars Steve Coogan and Hilary Duff. The quirky comic drama is set in the mid-1980's and follows Campbell Babbitt (Coogan) on his assignment to cover the Challenger Space Shuttle launch and his wayward indulgences with a group of confused youth.

Anagram Pictures returned to Post Modern with the thriller, The Thaw. Val Kilmer stars as a research scientist in Mark Lewis' global warming creature feature in which a melting polar ice cap releases a giant prehistoric parasite. The Thaw is scheduled for release later in 2009.

Insight Films began our New Year with the film Stan Helsing. Penned and directed by Bo Zenga, this spoof on creature features follows Stan Helsing, the classic unexpected and reluctant hero, while he does battle with a series of monsters.

David Doerksen (Waterfront Pictures) brought us our next two films, both suspense thrillers: Message Deleted and Fear Island. Matthew Lillard stars in Rob Cowan's Message Deleted as a bumbling writer/professor who is tricked into being the voyeur participant in a murderer's killing spree. Michael Storey's Fear Island features Lucy Hale and Haylie Duff among the ensemble cast who become marooned on an island and together try to fend off the murderous ambitions of a mysterious foe. Both films are scheduled for release later this year.

Four Movies Close Out Summer

Post Modern is very proud to announce that we recently completed audio post on Rainmaker Animation's feature film The Nutty Professor: Facing The Fear. This high action adventure featuring the voice of Jerry Lewis will be released this December by The Weinstein Company.

Everyone's favourite trio of hockey hacks is back. The Hansons join Leslie Nielsen to star in Universal Home Entertainment's Slap Shot: The Junior League. This funny flick follows a challenged team's rise to glory. The large ensemble cast gels well in this addition to the Slap Shot series. Universal plans a quick release on this project which has just completed post at Post Modern.

Congratulations to Carl Bessai! His film Mothers & Daughters has been accepted into the Toronto International Film Festival. This funny and resonating piece examines the relationships between several pairs of women using a combination of interview and dramatic scenes. Set in Vancouver, Mothers & Daughters features a who's who of local talent and offers tour de force performances by the central women. Post Modern is in the midst of completing post on the film.

Michelle Pfeiffer, Ashton Kutcher and Kathy Bates star in David Hollander's feature Personal Effects for Insight Film. This is a beautifully languid film of loss, love and survival. The audience follows the characters' tortuous pull between despair and the need to continue living. Post Modern has completed editorial and will mix Personal Effects in early September.

Action-Packed Winter

Post Modern Sound is pleased to welcome two high-octane features this spring: Joy Ride: End of the Road and Freestyle.

Louis Morneau's Joy Ride: End of the Road is a thriller for 20th Century Fox. Nicki Aycox, Nick Zano, Kyle Schmid and Canadian Laura Jordan star in the story of 2 sisters who are heading with their boyfriends to Las Vegas when a short-cut brings them into conflict with a menacing semi-truck driver known as Rusty Nail.

William Dear's Freestyle follows the aspirations of Cale Bryant (Corbin Bleu) to win a motocross amateur championship in order to support his family. At the helm as an Executive Producer is our friend and long-time tenant, David Doerksen. We are happy to add Freestyle to our library of films with Waterfront Pictures.

Cars, trucks and motorbikes are on the menu for many Post Modern SFX editors these days. Both features are scheduled to mix in March.

Wrapping 4 and Welcoming 5

Post Modern Sound recently wrapped post production on Dr. Dolittle 4: First Dog, starring Kyla Pratt as Maya Dolittle. Director Craig Shapiro brought a deft sense of timing to this romp of a tale, which will be released on DVD by 20th Century Fox. Post Modern mixers, Greg Stewart and Ian Emberton, were delightfully challenged on this kid's comedy featuring a menagerie of talking animals. Greg had the pleasure of working with Don MacDonald's score, which worked beautifully throughout the film.

We are also starting post on Dr. Dolittle 5: Goin' Hollywood directed by Alex Zamm. Our crew welcomes the additions to this series because they're always fun, busy and colourful.

POST MODERN SOUND MIXES PETER GREENAWAY'S NIGHTWATCHING

Post Modern Sound is proud to be creating the sound-scape for Peter Greenaway's epic homage to Rembrant's life in his new film Nightwatching. Martin Freeman leads the cast with a stellar performance as Rembrandt van Rijn. Greenaway tells his theory of Rembrandt's rise and fall, speculating that conspirators in the militia plotted to destroy him because he had discovered the truth behind their captain's death. The film flows through deftly crafted and beautiful scenes, echoing 17th century paintings in light and texture. In addition to his professional life, we are introduced to an intimate view of Rembrandt's home-life: the birth of his son and his romantic life with his loves and lovers.
Sound supervisor and designer, Tony Gort, led the Post Modern crew through the challenging sound build. Gort spent a week in Amsterdam working with Greenaway and his editor Elmer Leupen, returning with the materials to begin our editorial. The mix will be completed in the coming weeks.

PILOTS RING IN THE NEW YEAR AT POST MODERN SOUND

Post Modern Sound is off to a running start in 2007 with the posting of two exciting and very different pilots.

First in line is No Equal Entertainment's production of jPod, written by Douglas Coupland and Michael MacLennan (Queer As Folk, Godiva's) and based on Coupland's successful novel of the same name. The one hour comedy follows Ethan Jarlewski through a hilarious myriad of sometimes benign, sometimes personally catastrophic situations with his family and co-workers.

Following in quick succession after jPod is Blueprint Entertainment's one-hour action pilot, Nobody. Penned by Kevin Murphy (Desperate Housewives) and Jon Cooksey (The Collector, So Weird), the script is based on the acclaimed Nobody comic book. The pilot follows Jessica Carter (Dawn Stern): a mother who gives up her own identity to save the life of her daughter and, in payment, is forced to fight evil on behalf of a covert, other-worldly power.

Post Modern wishes all the players the best of luck in their pursuit to take these pilots to series.

“With the director Mike Dowse, we pushed the limits with Pete Tong and the results are incredible,” says head mixer Greg Stewart.  “I can’t imagine a greater challenge for sound than a film about a DJ that goes deaf”.

In six separate categories and 13 nominations total, Post Modern crews are also celebrating the numerous nominations and awards by the company’s clients.   Post Modern provided post audio services for all of the nominated projects including the television series The L Word, Andromeda, Romeo, and Secret Central as well as A Beachcombers Christmas, the short film Drive, and the documentary The Life and Times of Arthur Erickson, the gold medal winner from the 2005 New York Festivals International film and video awards.

It’s All Gone Pete Tong opens in Canadian theatres on June 10th and has been receiving rave reviews in both the U.S. and the UK.  The Collector airs on CityTV and begins production for Season 3 in June.
